Ashtanga Fundamentals
with Sophie and Stacy

Sundays 25 May & 22 June
9:30–11:00 AM
25 euro per session / 40 euro for both

Join Sophie and Stacy for a 2-workshop mini series exploring the fundamentals of the powerful Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga practice. We’ll discuss the key elements of practice, break down the Sun Salutations, and extract the powerful strength and grounding from the Standing postures. Each session will include some Discussion, Question and Answer time, and physical practice together.

Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or a new student to the practice, these workshops will be of benefit to you. Students newer to the practice will learn valuable insight into the fundamental postures of the Ashtanga system, which includes the Sun Salutations and the Standing Postures. Those with more experience will have the opportunity to review and renew their relationship with practice through those same postures.

Workshop Details

Sunday 25 May · 9.30–11 AM
Foundations: Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutations)
This first session will focus on the essential foundation of the Ashtanga practice - Surya Namaskara. We’ll begin with a short talk, followed by practical exploration using hatha yoga techniques to deepen our understanding of this core sequence.

Sun Salutations include fundamental movements and postures such as Samasthitih, Chaturanga, Upward Dog, and Downward Dog. We’ll break these down with attention to alignment, effort, and mindset,  setting the tone for the rest of the practice.

Sunday 22 June · 9.30–11 AM
Rooted Strength: The Standing Sequence

In this second workshop, we’ll explore the Standing Sequence - a consistent element of the Ashtanga system across all series. These postures offer strength, balance, and connection to the ground.

Though often seen as an upper-body-focused method, Ashtanga's Standing Sequence invites us to awaken the legs and draw power from the earth. By building strength and stability from the ground up, we create a steady base for the entire practice, allowing space to breathe, move, and be present.
